Concerning Mary. The Guise family were very powerful in France and she was probably urged to take the crown and solidify a staging area for possible future attacks against England. She came to staunchly protestant Scotland as a catholic.Brave at that time. She seemed a bit naive about the clans and the Scottish lack of reverence for monarchs in general. If she had a bit more time and better council and not trusted Elizabeth so much I think she she would’ve grown into the role. She’d have been well used to intrigues at European courts. She definitely had something.500 years later we’re talking about her on the web.And we’ve all beheaded dandelions.
I agree, coming to rule Scotland having not grown up there and the religion changing made for a very difficult prospect. Fatal error to flee to England when she might still have recovered her position in Scotland, though understandable.
Just listened to your Mary Queen of Scots episodes and so happy you gave her Rex Factor. Everything that could have gone wrong for her went wrong but she never gave up. Elizabeth only got by because she had strong men that had her back, while Mary only had men trying to stab her in the back. Mary was a much more likeable queen and would have been a success at ANY other time in Scottish history.
Yeah, luck never seemed to go her way! And she certainly was not well served by the men at court – a loyal court like that enjoyed by Elizabeth could have made a big difference.
Macbeth definitely deserved the Rex Factor . Despite Shakespeare’s efforts .
He was safe in his rule that he was able to go to Rome .
Kind of disagree about James VI. You could make the argument that the best thing he did for Scotland was leave… His great achievement, grabbing the English crown and uniting the realms, was accomplished by throwing his mother under the bus, or axe if you will. He didn’t create the KJ bible, he just made them name it after him. Can’t find the polls, darn it (will try another browser) but I just don’t think he was very rexy.
Hi Caroline, interesting points about James – it’s either a great achievement or a damning indictment that Scotland prospered so well after he wasn’t in the country! Hope you’ve been able to find the polls now, they’re on this page – the names at the tops are hyperlinks to the polls below, so if you scroll down then you should find them all.
Nope, no polls on this page for me… but I made my opinion known, lol
Oops, found the polls – they only show in Internet Explorer for me, not Chrome or Firefox… don’t know what bit of tech you used to create them but it’s evidently not universally popular…
James V should have got the rex factor he was great
He certainly showed more promise and ability than most historians often give him credit, but dying so young did he really manage to achieve all that much in the end?
Got to agree with Kenneth McAlpine, Constantine II and David I getting Rex factor. With Alexander III on the horizon it will be interesting to see how many more pick up the prize. I’m looking forward to Anglo-Scottish match up for Rex Factor top place!
Looking at the early royal Scots I am struck by the names given to their children. For example, Constantine I’s son who became king didn’t share his name with his grandfather (Kenneth I) but with his great uncle (Donald I). Aed’s son who became king also didn’t have his grandfather’s name (Kenneth I) but shares his uncle’s name (Constantine I).
I don’t know about traditions associated with choosing a child’s name, but at a basic level I would guess Donald I and Constantine I were well respected at the time the names were chosen for these children. Knowing who later generations wanted their children to be associated with has an influence on how I vote. A large number of namesakes indicates Rex Factor to me 🙂
It’s possible with Constantine II that he was born when his uncle, Constantine I was king, which may have been the motivation behind the name. However, there may well be some more Kenneths to look forward to as the series goes on, so don’t write K-Mac off on the name dynasty front!
You never got around to explain how Donald lost his trousers! Assuming it to be the stuff of legend, how did it arise?
Alas, neither the sources nor the makers of the playing cards have cared to divulge the fate of Donald’s trousers!
